1. Re: ejb failure on 64bit jdk ( solaris sparc )
wdfink Aug 3, 2015 1:22 PM (in response to basita)Not sure why this happen.
Did you test a later version of JBoss 5?
Also why do you switch to 64Bit JVM? Do you need more memory, most applications are running better with <2GB memory and therefor you don't need a 64Bit JVM

2. Re: ejb failure on 64bit jdk ( solaris sparc )
basita Aug 5, 2015 8:07 AM (in response to wdfink)our client is having performance issues with the application. We wanted to see if increasing memory to 4GB would help. Any other ideas on how to troubleshoot this further?

3. Re: ejb failure on 64bit jdk ( solaris sparc )
basita Aug 5, 2015 8:08 AM (in response to wdfink)No, we cannot try with a later version of jboss but it appears to be related to jdk rather than jboss

mayerw01 Aug 8, 2015 7:06 AM (in response to basita)Did you check if the problem persists when upgrading to JDK 1.7?

5. Re: ejb failure on 64bit jdk ( solaris sparc )
wdfink Aug 9, 2015 3:20 PM (in response to basita)What you might do is check whether you really need more memory.
So if you enable GC logging and use jstat or visualGC this might show you how the memory is utilisized. If the oldGen is not getting utilisized more that 50-70% more memory might not have an effect.
You might check what -Xms -Xmx value is the maximum, thats different for each OS and I don't remember how Solaris restrict it.
Also more memory might have issues with longer GC and the performance go worse.

6. Re: ejb failure on 64bit jdk ( solaris sparc )
basita Aug 10, 2015 5:30 AM (in response to wdfink)We did enable GC but we do not see excessive garbage collection in the gc logs.
The -Xmx doesnt seem to make any difference . Initially it was 1GB and we changed it to 2GB.
It appears to be a problem with the hardware . Is there any way to validate this?

7. Re: ejb failure on 64bit jdk ( solaris sparc )
basita Aug 10, 2015 5:31 AM (in response to mayerw01)We havent tested with java 7 because apparently the community edition of jboss 5 doesnt support jdk 7.

8. Re: ejb failure on 64bit jdk ( solaris sparc )
mayerw01 Aug 10, 2015 7:26 AM (in response to basita)My information is that jboss 5 is running on jdk7 https://access.redhat.com/articles/113083
it might be necessary to change your configuration http://stackoverflow.com/questions/20790852/what-community-version-of-jboss-is-recommended-for-jdk-1-7-and-why

9. Re: ejb failure on 64bit jdk ( solaris sparc )
basita Aug 10, 2015 11:57 AM (in response to mayerw01)yes but we are not using EAP, we are using the GA version

10. Re: ejb failure on 64bit jdk ( solaris sparc )
mayerw01 Aug 11, 2015 4:19 AM (in response to basita)Hmm, maybe you are right. But fact is that jboss-5.1.0.GA starts up without any issues on my linux with java version "1.7.0_80"
And the 2nd link above explicitly refers to JBoss AS 5.1.0 (plus the fix for JBAS-6981). [JBAS-6981] AttachmentStore MC bean (org.jboss.system.server.profileservice.repository.AbstractAttachmentStore) configur… also refers to JBossAS-5.1.0.GA.
I understand also that [JCR-1931] [TESTING] Failed to boot JBoss AS under Oracle JDK 1.7 - Jira refers to jboss-5.1.0.GA as well.

11. Re: ejb failure on 64bit jdk ( solaris sparc )
wdfink Aug 19, 2015 1:47 PM (in response to basita)So if you only use 1-2GB there should be no need for a 64bit-VM and from my experiance the 64bit VM is equal or maybe slower in this case.

mayerw01 Aug 20, 2015 4:38 AM (in response to wdfink)Surprisingly apparently the opinions vary regarding this question.

13. Re: ejb failure on 64bit jdk ( solaris sparc )
basita Aug 20, 2015 4:49 AM (in response to wdfink)I guess whether to use 64bit or 32bit is another discussion. the main issue we have is the fact that the application doesn't start up. We need to know how to go about troubleshooting this. I need to get to the bottom of it. Any ideas on how we can narrow this down?

14. Re: ejb failure on 64bit jdk ( solaris sparc )
wdfink Aug 20, 2015 6:51 AM (in response to mayerw01)I think that depends on many different things
My experience is based on an application@jboss so I suppose it might be similar for other applicaitons.
But this is only my view and may different for others.
