JBoss Developer Studio - Installer Error: "Access Denied"

Hey guys,

I'm trying to install the Red Hat JBoss Developer Studio and constantly get the following error after about 3 minutes of installation process (it's at part 2 of the overall progress):

Application failed, log file location: D:\jbdevstudio\studio\p2\director\configuration\1389966467284.log

"Zugriff verweigert" means "Access denied", so I guess it's a matter of access rights. I just don't know how to grant the missing rights to the folder or installation if that's the problem.

I'm trying to install to the directory D:\jbdevstudio but I also tried other directories with the same result. I also tried disabling EAP during the installation using the installer with EAP included - both without success. The installation (with the same installer) works fine on my MacBook though!

I know there are ways to just install the Developer Studio additionally to a standard Eclipse environment (which works for me) but this problem with the installer is still bugging me and I'd like to get it running.

My system:

Microsoft Windows Vista + SP2 (unfortunately) - maybe that's why Vista is not officially supported by Red Hat?

Java JDK 1.7.0 Update 51

Any help is greatly appreciated!

We have alike problem reported, but It happens sometimes not constantly under windows. Could you attach log file from D:\jbdevstudio\studio\p2\director\configuration\1389966467284.log?

The similar issue is "JBDS-2635 Installation sometimes fail with bundle was not found on Windows".

One more thing to check is that jar is not damaged.

I tried installing via jar again and this time there is a completely different set of files "affected".

I don't think the jar is broken because I already tried two different jar files (one with EAP included and one without) and the first jar worked fine on my MacBook anyway.

Can you try installing with JDK 6 instead of 7? Seemingly random pack.gz file read failures could be the result of a bad unpack200.exe version.

For what it's worth, you can install JBDS 7.1.0.GA via Eclipse Marketplace into Eclipse Kepler SR1 via these links:

Install this:

http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/packages/eclipse-ide-java-ee-developers/keplersr1

Then drag the install link from this page into Eclipse:

If you prefer an offline experience for installing JBDS, there's an update site zip available to use instead of Marketplace, located here:

Using the zip you'd want to also start with Eclipse Kepler SR1, then Help > Install new software > Add > Archive > browse for the downloaded update site zip > install everything.

Hi Nick,

thanks but I am aware of that method and I was already capable of performing an installation like that (Eclipse standalone and installation of JBoss Developer Studio or JBoss Tools as an extension). Nonetheless it would be nice to figure out the solution to the error that's going on with the JBDS installer.

I tried installing it with JDK6 but that didn't help unfortunately.

Can you test if this works if you run this as administrator on your windows OS ? (see http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/11841-run-administrator.html on how)

The errors does not seem to be about reading errors, but about permission errors to the file system you are installing to.

If you can complete the install as administrator then it is most likely a permission issue.

unfortunately there seems to be no possibility to directly start jar files as an administrator on Windows. What I tried is logging into the administrator account and starting the jar file from a console with administrator rights - but that didn't help either, it still produced the same error as mentioned above.

If you run cmd.exe as adminstrator you should be able to run java -jar installer.jar from there and have full admin access. I believe logging in as adminstrator still runs the apps in a "restricted" mode if not explicitly asked (this might be wrong but I just recall having to be very explicit about it

Does this error still occur if you try install it on another drive than D ?

Yes, I was also quite paranoid about it and made sure the command line was started with admin rights ("run as admin") additionally to logging in as an administrator. I started the jar the way you described but it didn't help. And yes, I also tried other directories and drives.

There are no .pack.gz files in installer, but for some reason p2director tries to unpack them instead of jars.

Looking through the .log files I see several problems to fix:
1. in ibds p2repo inside jar as meta information in jbds/artifacts.jar that declares there are packed (.pack.gz) and unpacked .jar artifacts, but p2repo contains only .jars
2. org.eclipse.core.net_1.2.200.v20130430-1352.jar is missing in p2director application and that leads to IProxyService ClassNotFound exception
3. After testing on windows I found one more problem in log that is not reported here

Installation works for me Under windows 7, I'll try to test it under Vista at home to see if I can replicate it.

I guess if there would be no problem (1) above, installer would work. For some reason it decides to install packed artifacts instead of using jar files.

Item 3 looks like a refactoring bug in that we have org.eclipse.equinox.p2.publisher.EclipseGenerator but want com.jboss.jbds.product.EclipseGenerator or refer to com.jboss.jbds.product.EclipseGenerator when we should use org.eclipse.equinox.p2.publisher.EclipseGenerator.

Item 2 could be fixed by adding that to the target platform.

Item 1 might require that we rebuild the repo w/ pack200 disabled, or perhaps just regen the metadata with FeaturesAndBundlesPublisher to strip out the extra metadata.
