1. JBoss on Linux / Windows
picachio Apr 8, 2011 4:06 AM (in response to sujith)Interesting to find this old thread, perhaps not many would consider Windows at that time, would anyone care to comment on this?
I understand that the answer may be "depends", but in general it would be interesting to know how you make a choice based on technical considerations

2. JBoss on Linux / Windows
peterj Apr 8, 2011 8:30 AM (in response to picachio)This has been discussed in dozens of other threads. My team has done significant testing of JBoss AS running on Windows and Linux on the exact same hardware and have not found any statistically significant performance difference. Therefore, use the one that your system admins are most comfortable with managing.

3. JBoss on Linux / Windows
picachio Apr 11, 2011 7:40 AM (in response to peterj)Thanks for responding, I agree with you but unfortunately the project owner does not think the same, they want us to provide justifications on technical merits, or what most companies would use, really a tough assignment for me.

4. JBoss on Linux / Windows
wdfink Apr 11, 2011 10:35 AM (in response to picachio)A plus for Red Hat Enterprise Linux will be the file system.
Here the HornetQ should be faster because of the faster IO.

5. JBoss on Linux / Windows
jesse.hazen Apr 11, 2011 11:44 AM (in response to picachio)I believe the metrics will come out about the same between Windows and Linux, but keep in mind uptime. You will almost undoubtedly see better uptime in a Linux environment.
However, uptime aside, I'm sure the performance metrics come out so similar that no decisions can be based solely on those metrics.

6. JBoss on Linux / Windows
picachio Apr 12, 2011 12:22 AM (in response to sujith)I heard an interesting point today from a colleague, it is believed that people who has chosen JBOSS would tend to be follower of Linux platform, so there can be less JBOSS implementations on Windows, is this a fair assessment?

7. JBoss on Linux / Windows
wdfink Apr 12, 2011 2:51 AM (in response to picachio)I think it will be a fair assesment, because from my experience most of 'server' instances are running under UNIX (Linux, Solaris, ...) control.
Because of uptime (still menitionend by Jesse), (remote)administration, license cost, more installations, ...

8. JBoss on Linux / Windows
peterj Apr 18, 2011 12:43 PM (in response to peterj)Cost is another consideration. To deploy on Windows you will have to purchase Windows Server (you cannot use any desktop version due to licensing restrictions unless you have less than 10 users). And Windows Server ain't cheap. In addition, there are various licensing peculiarities if you plan on running Windows Server within a virtual machine.
Those facts alone might drive you to using a Linux distro.

paolomenon Jun 23, 2015 9:58 AM (in response to sujith)I know that's really an old post, anyway just want to point out a few links that I used before to comparing RHEL with Windows Server 2012. Then this may help you as well.
Comparing network performance: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 vs. Microso…
Comparing file system performance: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 vs. Mic…
