What version of Red Hat Linux do I need

I'm an Linux newbie.

Recently I purchased the 99USD JBoss Developer Studio License.

I downloaded RHEL Server 5 and tried to install it.

Received an error that I was running 1.4.2 form the JDK and needed to upgrade.

So I upgraded to JDK 7 and the error persists.

Then I run thru the messages in the community section and found out I should have upgraded to 6.

So I managed to uninstall the JDK 7 and installed JDK 6 update 29,

Trying to install Developer Studio still mentions that I am running 1.4.2 and should upgrade.

I'm not sure how to get rid of 1.4.2.

I'm stuck.

Should I download a fresh Linux version and try to install again? If so, which version of Linux?

Or is there a better way?

Hi Jan,

What is the output of the 'java -version' command in a terminal? If this is not the JDK 6 that you installed you can try to use the alternatives command to install/configure the correct version. More info here: http://lanestechblog.blogspot.com/2008/03/using-alternatives-in-linux-to-use.html

Hi Koen,

Found some time to try it out again. The output of the command is:

[root@localhost ~]# java -version
java version "1.4.2"
gij (GNU libgcj) version 4.1.2 20080704 (Red Hat 4.1.2-51)

Apparently I'm running 1.4.2.
Funny.....

But if Sun's Java is not the Java to run on a RHEL implementation (as mentioned on http://lanestechblog.blogspot.com/2008/03/using-alternatives-in-linux-to-use.html), why do I have to install it if I want to use JBOSS Developer studio?

I followed the instructions. Executing java -version still replies with 1.4.2.
When I manually try to install the 1.6.29 packages, RHEL replies that they are already installed.

Are you running JBOSS developer? And if so, on what platform?
I would like to use open source on my next assignment, but this is getting very cumbersome.

GNU libgcj 1.4.2 is *not* Java compliant and it is for sure not Java 5 and upwards.

The RHEL Server is as the name says more suited for server installations than desktop development.

If you want to use this then I suggest following the instructions here: http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/JBoss_Enterprise_SOA_Platform/4.3/html/Getting_Started_Guide/appe-install_jdk_rhel.html

They explain how to install a real JDK on RHEL, by using "yum install java-1.6.0-openjdk-devel"
