Why does subclipse plug-in crash JBoss Developer Studio on startup?

    tpc1095

The subclipse plugin crashes JBDS on startup so I have to re-install from scratchin a new directory.  It does his on subclipse for both version 1.8 and also 1.6.  I have 1.8 installed in my JEE Eclipse Indigo.  Does anyone know why?  Is there a workaround?

I installed jbdevstudio-product-win32-4.1.0.v201108011413R-H647-GA.jar (version 4.1) and got it to run on Windows 7, 64 bit, using the 32-bit JDK.  I had to add the "-vm" to jbdevstudio.ini because the installer refused to let me pick the 32-bit JDK (says "<not found>" is not Java 5 compatible.)  The instructions to put the 32-bit JRE onto the start of the PATH failed as well (cannot find class "Object").   The "-vm" option seems to work.  My co-workers are doing this successfully but all the install failures have shaken my confidence a bit.

      Does that look right?

Maybe somehow I installing the wrong plugin version?  How do I know if I am picking the right version of a plug in?  The subclipse page talks about "Eclipse 3.2/Callisto, 3.3/Europa, 3.4/Ganymede, 3.5/Galileo, 3.6/Helios, 3.7/Indigo"  The Eclipse "About Eclipse" tells me it is Indigo.  The "About" for JBDS simply says "Version: 4.1.0.GA".  In general, how does one determine if a JBDS is also an Indigo or Ganymede or whatever?

Are you installing SVN team support from JBoss Developer Studio updatesite or somewhere else ?

When you crash what errors are you getting ? logs/stacktraces ?

About the installer problems not letting you choose the JDK could you let me know which OS/Version of JDK (link for download?) was giving you the "not found" error ?

FYI: JBDS 4.1 is based of 3.6/Helios - they way to know is Help > About > Installation Details and you can navigate the tree of JBoss Developer Studio feature and see it is using 3.6.1 for the Eclipse Platform component.

I did not know about the JBoss Developer Studio update site.  I just went straight to http://subclipse.tigris.org/update_1.8.x (and guessed at which version to use.)    I think this answers my question about what I did that wrecked my install.

I eventually got JBDS to run in the x86 Java install.  Maybe next time there will be an installer for 64 bit.

Thanks for explaining how to determine the version of Eclipse.

I spoke too soon.  I tried the built-in site and now JBDS dies on startup.  I may have gone back to the 64 bit JDK, not sure if that accounts for this as I am getting the same behavior.

Seems you've bumped into https://issues.jboss.org/browse/JBDS-1648 which we are still working on figuring out what is causing it.

its not subversion that crashes it, its mylyn - and its specifically on Windows 64 bit.

Only known workaround is to *not* install mylyn.

You can read more details on JBDS-1648.

The other workaround is to use JBDS 5, which builds on Eclipse 3.7 and which includes a fix for this SWT bug.

You can get the latest JBDS 5 Early Access builds here: http://devstudio.jboss.com/earlyaccess/

                    Nick, thanks for replying.

I started on the path of using Eclipse and loaded, from JBoss Tools, just the plugins for web services and ESB.  So far nothing bad has happened.  I'll try again with JBDS when things get sorted out.

We've got an SWT patch available now. If you're an existing JBDS 4 user on Win32 or Win64 (mixed mode, using 32-bit JDK), you can install the patch from here:

                      http://devstudio.jboss.com/updates/4.0/

If you prefer the community version (it's the same content, but the URL is different), you can get it here:

                      http://download.jboss.org/jbosstools/updates/helios/

                        or

                      http://download.jboss.org/jbosstools/updates/requirements/swt/3.6.2.v3660-patched_JBDS-1648/

(Note that all URLs above should be automatically loaded into JBoss Tools and JBDS directly (or indirectly via compositing)  when installing, so it's easy to find the patch feature.)
