I recently hit this same error. We had been deploying on JBoss 2 and 3.0 fine, but got this when we switched to 3.2 Apparently 3.2 requires a DOCTYPE statement at the top the ejb-jar.xml We had been including that for WebLogic and WebSphere but for some reason not with our JBoss ear/jar. Add a suitable DOCTYPE to ejb-jar.xml and you should be fine.

Excellent tutorial ! Everyone new to Jboss development in eclipse should read this. Although its all pretty straightforward its nice to be able to turn your brain off sometimes and follow someone whose gone through the pain.
