Version 7

The list of projects currently on jboss.org (as of Monday 5th March 07) are:

The new design disposes of the JEMS, JBoss.ORG, and Community Labs categories and instead treats all projects as belonging to JBoss.ORG under one of the following categories:

The new categorization demonstrates that the jboss.org site is focussed on providing a complete set of Java Enterprise Middleware projects developed in open source. In this regard there are still a number of outstanding issues to resolve.

    Apache Tomcat

The Apache Tomcat project is hosted by the Apache Software Foundation and as such does not really belong on the same page as the other JBoss.ORG projects. In fact its inclusion has caused some discontent in the past as shown by the comments from Savio Rodrigues (ex-product manager for WebSphere Community Edition WAS CE) in this article. To quote:

"To indicate that Tomcat is related to the JBoss organization is what I find “evil” about JBoss."

Apache Tomcat was included on the jboss.org in the past as the site was used as both an open source development site and a promotional tool for the commercial side of JBoss. Now that we are moving to a cleaner separation it may be helpful to remove the direct reference to this project.

We can still promote the use of Tomcat within JBoss AS through the JBoss Web project. This is responsible for integrating Tomcat within the application server in addition to integrating the Apache Portable Runtime.

    JGroups

Although JGroups does not use jboss.org for hosting (hence the lack of the 'JBoss' prefix, it does use JIRA for project management. A desire has been expressed to move the hosting onto jboss.org in the near future.

    Hibernate

Hibernate and NHibernate are not hosted on the same machine as the other jboss.org projects although they use JBoss Labs as the hosting service. This will result in a different look and feel for the projects once the new jboss.org site is rolled out. As it currently looks different from jboss.org thanks to a different colour scheme and layout this may not be too much of a problem.

    JBoss Mail Server

This project has moved off jboss.org and is now hosted at buni.org.

    Reporting Services, Shotoku, Kosmos, DavCache

The names of these projects should either be changed to be prefixed with the word 'JBoss' like all the other projects or they should all reside in the Incubation category.

    Portlet Swap

Portlet Swap is an exception to the general rule that a JBoss.ORG project is a Java Enterprise Middleware project. Instead Portlet Swap represents an area where the community can share JSR-168 compliant portlets. A cleaner way to categorize the Portal related projects may therefore be:

    Portal

    JBoss Portal

      Portlets

      JBoss Wiki

      JBoss Forums

      JBoss Blog

      JBoss Kosmos

      other portlets...

    JBoss Labs

Finally the JBoss Labs project should not appear in any of the categories shown. This is because it does not represent a general purpose Java Enterprise Middleware project. Instead it represents a set of services to provide a hosting platform for the other projects.

A link to the JBoss Labs project page should be located at the bottom of each page so that interested users can download the software to host their own sites if necessary. At this point we do not expect a large number of external contributors to help drive the project so it will not offer the same services as the other projects, i.e. forums, wiki, JIRA etc...

To allow users to give feedback about the JBoss.ORG site a new JIRA project and forum will be set up.
